Presently, the country has more than 36,000 waste generating industries, producing approximately 6 million tonnes of wastes per annum. Around 50 per cent of this can be recycled, which is not being done.
As per the Frost & Sullivan Report 2013 - “Analysis of Indian Water and Wastewater Treatment Equipment Market” finds that the market earned revenues of over INR 63.07 billion in 2011 and estimates this to reach INR 102.34 billion in 2016. However, despite requirements for pollution control measures, industrial & hazardous wastes are generally dumped on land or discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment. And thus, it becomes, a large source of environmental pollution and health hazard.
According to third draft guidelines for environmentally sound management of electronic waste, top 10 states generate 70% of the total e-waste generated in the country. Sixty-five cities in India generate more than 60% of the total e-waste. While there is no large-scale organised e-waste recycling facility in the country and the entire recycling exists in unorganised sector.
