About Conference

Conversion of cities into metropolitan areas leads to socio-economic development but it also leads to complex city management problems. India's urban population grew at a rate of 31.8% during the last decade to 377 million, which is greater than the entire population of US, the third largest country in the world according to population. Country is facing a sharp contrast between its increasing urban population and available services and resources. Solid Waste Management (SWM) is one such service where India has an enormous gap to fill. Proper municipal Solid Waste (MSW) disposal systems to address the burgeoning amount of wastes are absent.

It is estimated that at least 50% of this waste is re-usable and has an economic value in the market.

We need proactive approach to create “Waste Management Infrastructure” for scientific management of waste.

Various approaches to privatisation exist, offering cost savings, new technologies, improvement in efficiency and effectiveness and reduction in the need for permanent sanitation staff. However, new approaches require flexibility and adaptation to become effective.

The proper management of biomedical waste has become a worldwide humanitarian topic today. Improper management of bio medical waste from different hospitals, clinics, and other health facilities increases the occupational and public health risks for patients, health workers, waste handlers etc. Direct contact with bio medical waste creates blood transmitted diseases. Although hazards of poor management of biomedical waste have aroused the concern world over, especially in the light of its far-reaching effects on human, health and the environment. World Health Organisation states that 85% of hospital wastes are actually non-hazardous, whereas 10% are infectious and 5% are non-infectious but they are included in hazardous wastes. A holistic approach to health-care management should include a clear delineation of responsibilities, occupational health and safety programs, waste minimization and segregation, the development and adoption of safe and environmentally-sound technologies and capacity building.
With the overwhelming response from the delegates and industry in the previous three conferences organised since 2010, the 5th National Conference on "Urban & Biomedical Waste Management 2014" will be organised jointly with Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) as Prime Supporter on August 8, 2014 at H. T. Parekh Auditorium, Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA), Ahmedabad. The theme of the conference is "Urban & Biomedical Waste Management : Technology, Trends & Development“. The conference will provide an excellent interactive platform for the discussion of the new developments and research in this field.
It will be of great interest to industry, service providers, researchers and government and non-government organizations involved in waste management with following focus and key objectives.
Urban Waste Management • Trends in Solid Waste Practices in Developing Countries • Regulatory and Economic Instruments for Solid Waste Management • Public-Private Partnership in Urban Environmental Infrastructure Projects • Eco-friendly City Planning for Maintaining the Quality of Urban Ecosystems • Landfill Technology & Management • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) - Some Case Studies Biomedical Waste Management • Biomedical Waste and its Impact on Environment and Health in Indian Cities • Biomedical Waste Management Present Trends & Practices • Towards an Integrated Healthcare Waste management Plans • Patient Safety and Bio-medical Waste management • Increasing Value & Reducing Waste in Biomedical Research, Regulation and Management • Automation in Biomedical Waste Management • Ecotoxicological Aspects and Health issues • Comparison of Healthcare Waste Management Planning in Developed and Developing Countries
