About Conference

World over waste produced continues to increase due to urbanization. This has created demand for effective waste management. World over there are several new initiatives taken to implement waste resources management projects through recycling or conversion of waste to high value products.

Urban Waste ManagementIndia produces 68.8 million tons of municipal solid waste per year, a level of 188,500 tons per day, which is increase at a rate of 1-1.33% annually. If it continues, India will generate 160.5 million tons by 2041. This has significant impact on the environment. However, public awareness, scientific approach, application of latest technologies are the major issues and needs of the time. A market analysis from Frost and Sullivan predicts that the waste to energy market could be growing at a 9.7% CAGR by 2013. Finance Minister, P Chidambaram promised in the Union Budget 2013-14 to provide incentives for waste-to-energy projects through PPP mode. This is a welcome step to promote waste to energy where potential is enormous.
In day to day practices, biomedical waste is generated through hospitals to laboratory. These wastes includes bandages, cotton, soiled linen, body parts, needle, syringes, medicines etc. These carry infection so it needs proper segregation, storage and handling. According to the Ministry of Environment and Forests gross generation of biomedical waste is around 4,05,702 kg/day of which only 2,91,983 kg/day is disposed, which means that almost 28% of the waste is still left untreated and find its way in dumps or water bodies and re-enters into the system. To solve this types of issues, government has already implemented regulations and guidelines. It has become mandatory for various hospitals to implement these rules (as amended). However, it is necessary to provide conceptual guidance and basic knowledge of handling and transportation to create awareness amongst the workers.
With the overwhelming response from the delegates and industry in the previous three conferences organized since 2010, the 4th National Conference on "Urban and Biomedical Waste Management 2013" with the theme "Capacity Building and Knowledge Management in Urban & Biomedical Waste Management" is organized on August 2, 2013 at J. B. Auditorium, Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA), Ahmedabad, jointly with Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) as Prime Supporter. The conference will provide an interactive platform for the discussion of the new developments and research in this field. Who should attend? It will be of great interest to industry, service providers, researchers and government and non-government organizations involved in waste management with following focus and key objectives.
